#309 Family Affair Turtles!

Everyone is getting in on turtle-mania.   :)
I did not make any of these turtles, and I only took the first picture.  I love that my family is supporting my turtle-y ways.

My parents always visit about this time of year and deliver our Christmas gifts and my oldest daughter's birthday gifts and pick up their Christmas gifts and Mom's birthday gifts.  Today was the day of their visit.  I would know, even without the tag, that this one is for me.   :)

Mom made a new tree skirt and decided to put, among other things, a couple turtles on it.  Just in case I end up inheriting it one day.  ;)     One looks remarkably similar to the turtle on my gift.  And this is the other one.  Dad took the picture.

And finally, Hubby was watching the movie Up, and saw this.  So he took a picture for me!

And now I have to go tuck these gifts away so the cat doesn't open them early on us.... Pin It

Ta da!!!!!

Bet you can't guess what her name starts with!   ;)

#307 Light Turtle

I saw something crafty online a while ago (sorry, I don't remember where).  The person had poked small Christmas lights through some canvas in a pattern and it looked really  nifty.  My version is different in that I decided to have my lights behind  the canvas, shining through it.  My way also allows it to be changed up whenever my little heart desires since my canvas is not full of holes.
With the room lights on:

With the room lights off:

I was a little limited because I had a single string of 20 lights.

#306 Towel Turtle

I didn't know you could fold towels into turtles!!!!!  I'm not even sure how I stumbled upon it.  Today, when I decided I wanted to try it, I googled "how to fold a towel turtle".  Apparently there are a few different ways to do it.  I watched a few different videos, then tried these guys.
My towels are kind of mismatched.  I have two gray ones the same size, so I used those.  The only hand towel I own is hot pink, so that had to do.

It's just like being in a hotel.
Except for the hot pink.

#305 Tiki Turtle

I spent the entire day (from 9 am to 6 pm) at "The Great Outdoors and DIY Weekend" show in Toronto.  Hubby was there doing scrollsaw demonstrations (the "DIY" part included The Home Workshop Show) so I tagged along.  Not because I like woodworking, but because "Boston" Rob Mariano was there!!  And I am a big fan of Survivor/Boston Rob.  The area he was in was decorated with Tiki plaques and one had a turtle on it!  So because I had a really, really  long day, this is my turtle.

See?????  I really did meet him!!!!

#304 Cheesy Turtle

I added a little something extra to the lasagna.  It isn't being cooked until tomorrow's (Saturday's) dinner so we will see if anyone notices...

#303 Folded paper turtle

I tried and tried to make a nifty origami turtle but I just couldn't get my fingers to cooperate.  So, I gave up and tried a different one.  I cut a piece of paper to about the size and shape of bill and followed a video.  When I finished, I thought it looked a little familiar.
Darn it!
This is the same turtle I made out of a five dollar bill a while back.  But it is past my bedtime so it will have to do for today.  You can see what remains of my original attempt behind my intact turtle.

#302 Peanut Butter Cracker Turtle

Hubby was snacking on peanut butter crackers so I thought I would play with his  snack for a change to make my turtle.

I figured Hubby would eat it but he had his fill and didn't want another one.  Neither did I.  So we did what any sane couple would do.  Stuck it to the roof of the dog's mouth.

I really don't think she was the slightest bit bothered, she was looking for more when she was done.  :)

#301 Apricot Turtle

We had apricot chicken for dinner tonight.  I find it easier to cut the dried apricots up with (clean) scissors rather than a knife.  I decided that I was going to cut an apricot into the shape of a turtle and add it to dinner.  It was surprisingly difficult to cut a shape into (out of?) an apricot!  I had forgotten about it by the time dinner was ready and didn't notice who got the "prize".  I had everyone looking for the 'special' apricot.  Hubby got it and knew exactly what it was.  :)

#300 300th Turtle

When we decided to paint our daughter's room, I brought home every purple paint chip they had for her to go through.  I still have a couple lying around so I used one to cut today's turtle out of.  Then I drew the number on a piece of paper, held the turtle up and took a picture of the number through the turtle cutout.

#299 Turtle Float

Obviously, I didn't make today's turtle.  Today was the annual Santa Claus parade!!!  My kids still love the parade and so the three of us took a subway adventure downtown and watched it!
This year there was a float by Turtles!   You know the chocolate, caramel and pecan kind.  Yummmmm!  I love those, and not because of the name, because they are delicious!  The fact that they are called "Turtles" is just a bonus.
Today's turtle is the float.

#298 Coffee Bean Turtle

While setting up the coffee maker for Hubby and my daughter  I decided to make a turtle.
I don't like coffee.
Maybe tomorrow I'll make a turtle using tea leaves.  :)

#297 Turtle of turtles

I wish I had one more so I could have covered up the sticky-tac I used to keep the shell together.  I have had these nifty little turtle beads for months and months.  I got them because I thought they were neat (I still do) but I still haven't figured out what to do with them.  Like I mentioned, they are beads, the hole goes from head to tail (if it had a tail, that is).  Any ideas?  I have a dozen.  I don't just want to string them together and call it a bracelet.

#295 Reindeer nose turtle

In my opinion it is too early to be decorating for Christmas, but I stumbled upon my reindeer "car costume" and decided to use the nose for today's turtle.

#294 CD Turtle

I went through some of the old computer discs.  Most of these are old children's games that are compatible with Windows 95/98!  And most of those  came free with cereal.  Even if by some miracle they work with Vista or 7, the kids have outgrown them.  (anything Disney was kept at my seventeen year old's request, so she can see if they work!) So a turtle they have become!

I tried to make the dining room light work with the shell of the turtle.

#293 Clampy the Turtle

Hubby needed an extra pair of hands in his shop today.  While assisting, I saw some clamps and thought they had turtle potential.  Hubby directed me to a circle of scrap wood that made a pretty good shell.  One small clamp makes the head and back feet and two teeny-tiny clamps make the front legs.

#292 Lunch Turtle

I used my daughter's sandwich (in a container) for the shell, everyone's Jell-o as the legs and an apple for the head.

#291 Cookie Turtle

My oldest is making chocolate chip cookies (as I type!) so I snagged a bunch to make today's turtle.  I found the perfect cookie for the head.  I think it looks like it has two eyes.

#290 Last Harry Potter themed turtle (for now)

Today Hubby picked up Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II.  Being the sweet guy that he is, he sprung for the extra $2 and got the "set" that included a Christmas ornament!  He is not a  fan, so I know he didn't get the ornament for himself.
I used it for the shell of today's turtle along with official Harry Potter 'replica' coins that I forgot my youngest daughter had.  Unfortunately, there are only three coins in the set.  Hubby's camera has a feature that allows you to "stitch" photos together.  He tried for about half an hour to get a good stitched photo of a turtle with a head and four limbs, but it just wasn't working well.  See what he does for me??  What a sweetheart!  While watching him, I thought I might be able to use Picnik's collage feature to match two cropped photos up.  They don't line up perfectly, but I still like the effect.

This ends my week of Harry Potter themed turtles.

I have enjoyed the Harry Potter series.  J.K. Rowling summed it up beautifully:
“Whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.” Pin It

#289 Deathly Hallows Turtle

My younger daughter's suggestion for today's turtle was to make a turtle using only Deathly Hallows symbols.  Here is my fabulous  interpretation of her suggestion.  I see my artistic skills have not improved over the last 288 postings!  Still having fun though.

*I had to edit this post because I am a doofus.  I very carefully drew out that turtle... wrong.  I mixed up the circle and the triangle.  Sadly, this is not the first time I have made that mistake.  I made my daughter a T-Shirt over the summer and did the same thing.  Luckily it was noticed long before it ever made it to the shirt, but still, you'd think I would remember after that!
I tried it twice with the proper symbol and liked the head better when it was facing the same direction as the body.  I also decided to leave my screw-up on the post as well.

What was I thinking???

#288 Follow the spiders, Harry

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Hagrid tells Harry to "follow the spiders" in order to learn some important information.

He looks a little too happy here!

#287 Turtle with a scar

Today's turtle has a Harry Pottar scar.  I chose a blue marble because in the movies Harry Potter has blue eyes. They are green in the books, but I like the blue marble better!

I'm not loving the cork body.  That is another one of those ideas that looked great in my imagination, but not-so-great in real life.  That's okay.  It gives me an excuse to use another one of these marbles later! Pin It

#286 More Harry Potter!

My plan was to do a Harry Potter turtle every day until Friday, but I'm not sure I have enough ideas for that!
We'll see.  Today I used my daughter's golden snitch 20Q game for the head and front "arms", bookmarks for the back legs, their tassels for the tail and my favourite book for the shell.

#285 Harry Potter "stuff" Turtle

My seventeen year old has a whole shelf displaying some of her Harry Potter stuff.

I took her Deathly Hallows necklace and four wands from her dolls action figures and made a turtle tonight.

This week is all about Harry in our house as we prepare for the final movie to be released on DVD/Blu-Ray on Friday.  We are re-watching all the movies to remind ourselves of how the story unfolded.  Tonight is Year 4: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.   (If you are doing the math, you may notice that we should be finished a day early, that is because our daughter has to work one day this week, so we have to skip that night.  Movie seven is on Thursday and we will be watching the last one of Friday.  Release day.  11.11.11.)

#284 Pumpkin Turtle

Today I made a little felt turtle but had the idea to make the shell look like a pumpkin.  I'll bet this would have been cute with a Jack O'Lantern face on it as well.

#283 Make up Turtle

Today I made my turtle using some of my oldest daughter's make up.
I wonder if many other teenage girls have their mothers asking:  "Can I borrow your make up to do my turtle?"  She didn't even bat an eye as she told me where she keeps it.  :)

#281 My Little Pony

The newest My Little Pony.  But I don't know what to name it.  Hubby says since there is already a Pinkie Pie, this one should be Turtle Soup.

I don't think so.
